Thorsby’s Movies in the Park back this summer

“Movies in the Park” in Thorsby will resume the first weekend after schools dismiss for the summer.
The Thorsby Fire Department is in its fourth year of hosting the free event, which takes place in Richard Wood Park.
“We’re going to have a bigger screen this year,” said Thorsby Fire Chief Lee Gunn. “We’re probably going to do about seven to eight movies this year, starting at dusk.”
People of all ages are invited to come out to the park at about 7 p.m. each Friday night the department is showing a movie.
“We average anywhere from 400 to 500 people a night,” Gunn said. “I’ve been here for about 18 years as fire chief. It was always something I wanted to do.”
According to Gunn, the department also uses the event to educate the public on fire prevention and safety.
“Mayor (Dearl) Hilyer, he put a 110 percent effort behind us getting things started,” Gunn said. “We’re just continuing on with it.”
Gunn said the movies will include several from Walt Disney, which will be shown in August. No movie should exceed about 100 minutes, Gunn said.
Those who attend may bring blankets, lawn chairs and food.
If the event is canceled any night because of weather, a makeup night will be added to the regular schedule.
