Vernell Lawrence Davis, age 81, of Stanton, died Monday, Feb. 20.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert Gregg Davis; her son, Robert L. Davis; her parents, Coba Nichols Lawrence and Dovie Irene Lawrence; her brothers, Branson Lawrence and Choba Lawrence Jr.; and her sisters, Lovice Bryan and Geneva Atchison.

She is survived by her children, Nicky Lee (Jean) Davis of Prattville and Martha D. (Allen) Green of Stanton. Grandchildren are William B. “Buddy” Davis of Merritt Island, Fla., and Rebecca D. “Becky” (Wendell) Devereux of Prattville. Great-grandchildren are Tyler, Molly and Will Devereux. She is also survived by six sisters and one brother, Evelyn Roebuck, Inez Lane, Nettie Smith, Augusta Harris, Donald (Betty Jo) Lawrence, Bettye (Lewis) Mitchell and Barbara Rush.

She is also survived by extended family, Jean and Ame’ Hill, and Kristine and Jonathan Farr.

She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and aunt. As a long-time member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, she served as the music director for numerous years. She was an educator in Autauga and Chilton counties.

The family would like to thank Thomas Atcheson, Lynn Abbott, Mary Gray, Virginia Jones and Becky Roper.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 5349 Alabama Highway 22, Stanton, with services at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, and honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Atcheson and the deacons of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ebenezer Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of your choice.
