A robbery suspect that was chased into Chilton County from Autauga and then fled on foot is now in custody, according to authorities.
The chase began when Autauga County officers received a report of a robbery in Marbury and identified the man’s vehicle, a white Camaro.
The suspect fled toward the Chilton County line, where sheriff’s deputies were waiting, Sheriff Kevin Davis said. They picked up the chase, and the suspect abandoned his vehicle about one mile into Chilton County off Highway 31 and fled on foot.
The sheriff department’s canine tracking team was called out and tracked the suspect about two miles through the woods, Davis said. He emerged on County Road 526 near Verbena, where he was taken into custody and later transferred to Autauga County authorities.
A state helicopter was also dispatched to help with the search.
Shortly after the suspect abandoned his vehicle, there were reports of shots being fired, but Davis said shortly after the incident that he had been unable to determine whether that indeed was the case and that officers were still looking for a weapon that the suspect might have discarded.
“Somebody reported that once the subject was out in the woods there was a noise that sounded like gunfire, but we don’t know about that,” Davis said.
Davis said there were no injuries related to the incident.
The chase began at 3:18 p.m. in Autauga County, and the man was taken into custody at 4:06 p.m., Davis said.
