Central Ala. Red Devils win preseason game

The Central Alabama Red Devils were pretty good in their first season, and they expect to be even better in their second.

A semi-pro football team based in Maplesville, the Red Devils went 7-2 in their first year of existence, and began their second campaign with a 2-0 practice game win over the Alabama Warriors, a team that defeated the Red Devils last year, 20-0.

Offensive lineman Cody Edwards said the Devils recorded a safety in the first quarter when the Warriors lined up to punt, the snap was mishandled and the punter knocked the ball ouf of the back of the end zone to prevent a Central Alabama touchdown.

It turned out to be the only score of the game.

“Our defense played outstanding,” Edwards said. “I don’t think they crossed the 50-yard line.”

Central Alabama’s first regular season game will be played Feb. 25 in the National Developmental Football League Classic in Marietta, Ga., against the Legion of Zoom.

The first home game will be March 10 against the Alabama Hawks at Maplesville High School’s George Walker Jr. Stadium. The game will begin at 6 p.m.

Edwards said many of the crucial players from last year’s team are back this season and that several new players have joined the squad, bringing the roster to about 50 members.

It should be a recipe for success.

“We didn’t know what to expect last year, but this year we’ve got a feel for it,” Edwards said.
