Chilton County’s wrestling team won its first match of the season last week, but injuries are taking their toll on the Tigers.

CCHS defeated Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa on Jan. 19 in a meet at Brookwood. The score was 33-18.

In the same meet, Chilton lost to Northridge, 45-18, and Brookwood, 66-18.

Justyn Jackson won all three of his 220-pound weight class matches, two by pin.

Spencer Watley (285-pound weight class) won by pin in a match against Northridge and by a 16-point decision against Hillcrest.

Caleb Smith (126) also won two out of three matches, one by pin.

The Tigers lost to host Wetumpka (65-16) and Holtville (54-18) in a meet on Jan. 24.

“We wrestled really hard both matches,” coach Danny Jackson said. “We are improving with each match, but the injury bug continues to bite us hard. We lost Andrew King for the season with back spasms. Also, Caleb Smith suffered a head injury against Holtville that might end his season as well.

“But we will continue to work toward sectionals. Hopefully, we will have Paul Shearon back for this weekend’s Shelby County Duals.”

Justyn Jackson and Patrick Kurdziel (120) won both of their matches in the meet at Wetumpka.

Watley and Clay Bailey (152) won one match each.

“Our young guys are continuing improvement in spite of the tough circumstances, but I believe the tough competition will pay off in the end,” Danny Jackson said.
