Prayer answered: Chilton County girls basketball players celebrate Thursday after Keona DeJarnett made a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. The Tigers would end up winning, 45-42.

After going winless last season, Chilton County’s girls basketball team won their first game of the year in their first try, 45-42 over Holtville on Thursday.

Keona DeJarnett sank a 3-pointer over a couple of Holtville defenders just as time ran out in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Keondra Looney scored five points in the extra period, three coming on a shot from beyond the arc with 52 seconds remaining that gave CCHS a 45-40 lead.

Coach Deon Timmons said he saw his players respond differently than they did when they faced adversity last season.

“When they got down, they didn’t lose their composure,” Timmons said. “They made the plays that were there at the end.”

The Tigers led almost the whole game, until a 3-pointer by Erica Lewis with 4:38 left in regulation gave Holtville a 30-29 edge.

The Bulldogs’ lead would grow to six points as the hosts couldn’t seem to get a shot to go in.

But Diana Guerrero made two free throws with 30.8 seconds remaining, and then a costly Holtville turnover set up DeJarnett’s heroics.

DeJarnett led all scorers with 14 points, and teammate Chynna Davis had 12 points.

Lewis scored 10 points for Holtville.
