A Montgomery man died in a single-vehicle wreck Saturday evening.

Four other people were injured in the wreck, which occurred at 6:23 p.m. on Interstate 65, 1.2 miles north of Clanton, near the rest area, according to a release by the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office.

Jatavis Maurice Burton, 20, of Montgomery was killed, according to information released by Alabama State Troopers.

Burton apparently was not wearing a seatbelt, Troopers said.

The driver of the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was Lambert Darran Smothers, also 20, and of Montgomery.

Troopers are investigating the wreck and would provide no additional information about the other victims, though the Sheriff’s Office release said one person was transported by helicopter and three were transported by ambulance to hospitals.

The vehicle was traveling northbound but crossed the median into the southbound lane.

Both southbound lanes and one northbound lane were shut down while emergency responders worked the incident. Southbound traffic was detoured off Exit 219 in Jemison.
