Mustangs falter on the road at Leroy

Isabella lost its starting quarterback and then the game Friday, falling 54-22 at Leroy in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs.

IHS quarterback Tyler Smith led a promising drive on his team’s first possession but then was injured on the second possession and never returned.

DeRodgus Campbell stepped into Smith’s position and rushed 19 times for 130 yards and a touchdown, but the Mustangs (6-5) fell behind 27-6 at halftime and never threatened the host Bears (7-4).

Also scoring for Isabella was Nathan Smith, on a 10-yard run, and Christian Littleton, who recovered a Leroy fumble and ran it in for six points.

Jacob Carroll ran in the 2-point conversion after Smith’s score, and Bobby Knox added two points after Littleton’s play.

Aaron Ratliff paced the Isabella defense with nine tackles.

Jordan Davis had seven tackles, and Chanley Ratliff had six stops.
