Harris to speak at Veterans’ Day program

Elmer Harris, former Alabama Power president and Chilton County native, will be the guest speaker at next Friday’s Veterans’ Day Celebration.

Harris, who graduated from Chilton County High School and Auburn University, served in both the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard. He worked his way up at Alabama Power to become its top executive in 1989. He currently serves as Honorary Consul General of Japan.

The annual Veterans’ Day program will be held on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. on the third floor of the Chilton County Courthouse. The program is themed “American Veterans: Our Heroes of the Past, Present and Future.”

In addition to remarks from Harris, the program will also include a moment of silence for prisoners of war and those missing in action. The program will also include the presentation of colors, patriotic music and prayer. The ceremony will close with the playing of “Taps.”

After the program, everyone is invited to American Legion Post 6’s building on Enterprise Road in Clanton for refreshments and fellowship.

The Veterans’ Day Celebration is sponsored by the following Chilton County veterans organization: Disabled American Veterans Chapter 33, Clanton Veterans of Foreign Wars 3193, American Legion Post 6 and American Legion Post 343.
