Thorsby passing combination racking up yards

Thorsby coaches knew coming into the season there were going to be several new components in the Rebels’ offensive machine.

Two seem to be working remarkably well together: quarterback Braden McRae and receiver Matt Morgan, both of whom are sophomores.

The duo is helping make up for the production lost from last season, after the team’s leading passer, receiver and top two leading rushers were lost to graduation.

In last week’s 56-42 homecoming win over Central-Hayneville, McRae completed 19 passes in 25 attempts for 275 yards and five touchdowns, and rushed 17 times for 100 yards and another score.

Morgan, meanwhile, caught 11 passes for 171 yards, four touchdowns and a 2-point conversion, good enough to earn The Clanton Advertiser’s Player of the Week honor.

“In the 14 years I’ve been here, we’ve never had a receiver and quarterback have a game like Matt and Braden did (last) Friday,” Thorsby offensive coordinator Corey Clements said.

The pair had help from junior Nathan Oldroyd, who had nine rushes for 21 yards and two touchdowns to go along with seven receptions for 84 yards and one TD.
