Mustang pride: Isabella’s volleyball team won its area tournament on Monday and advanced to the regional round of the playoffs.

Isabella’s volleyball team won its 14th consecutive area championship Monday.

The host Mustangs defeated Thorsby in the championship match, 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-21).

Savannah Kissel was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She recorded eight kills and eight aces against Thorsby.

Teammates Khadijah Craig (seven kills), Allison Mims (seven digs) and Heather Posey (21 assists and three digs) were also named to the all-tournament team.

Thorsby defeated Billingsley, 3-2, in the first match of the evening.

The Rebels dropped the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-11, before fighting back to win the next three sets, 25-22, 25-21, 15-13.

THS had trouble with Billingsley’s service game and its free ball offense. The Bears often got the ball back over the net on the first of their three allowed hits—before the Thorsby defense had time to get in position.

The Rebels were down to their final six points, trailing 19-18 in the third set, but THS won seven of the next 10 points and never looked back.

The win over Billingsley set up the loss to Isabella, but a second-place finish was all that was required to advance to a sectional, which both Isabella and Thorsby will compete in Saturday at a site that had not been determined at press time.

Thorsby’s Sade’ Archie and Jennifer Spivey were named to the all-tournament team.

Archie recorded 25 kills, 10 digs, six aces and two blocks in the two matches combined.

Spivey had 10 digs and nine kills.

Shannon Massey was Billingsley’s selection to the all-tournament team. Massey had five digs and three aces in the loss to Thorsby.
