A Clanton man stands accused of stealing from West End Baptist Church and faces separate drug charges after police searched his residence.

Albert Theo Hayes, 38, faces charges of theft of property, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of prescription drugs and criminal trespassing — all misdemeanors.

Clanton Police seized several marijuana plants Monday night from a home on Martha Street in Clanton.

Clanton Police received a call around 11:30 Monday night about a suspicious person hanging around West End Baptist Church. They responded to what they believed to be a theft in progress and soon found the suspect at a home in the 200th block of Martha Street, just down the street from the church.

Police Chief Brian Stilwell said detectives recovered four marijuana plants from the home, some in the house and some growing outside in a backyard.

Propane tank and grill hoses taken from West End Baptist Church were also recovered at the home, Stilwell said.

Hayes was booked in the Chilton County Jail under a $2,500 bond.
