U.S. soldier Donny Eslinger, 19, of Jemison was recently flown to Germany to receive further treatment for injuries he sustained in Afghanistan from a surprise attack by Afghan insurgents on Sept. 24.

Eslinger was being treated at an Afghan hospital prior to the flight. Doctors were waiting for his condition to stabilize substantially before releasing him.

Mary Sazera, Eslinger’s mother, began posting updates on her Facebook profile shortly after he was wounded.

Since then, Sazera said hundreds of people in Chilton County and around the world have reached out to her and her family during this difficult time.

Sazera’s latest status update, posted on Friday, Sept. 30 at about 11 a.m., said “This Alabama mom is headed to Germany to see her son! We have some very optimistic news on the brain swelling, but we must continue to pray for some other areas we are watching. I am on my way, Donny! Praise God and keep praying!”

Sazera could not be reached by phone on Friday for comment.
