An inmate at the Chilton County Jail was flown by helicopter to a hospital Thursday after leaping from a stairwell and sustaining injuries.

Aaron J. Mayberry of Verbena had been in jail since Monday on charges of driving under the influence, failure to appear on domestic violence and check fraud, Sheriff Kevin Davis said.

He was in a common dining area Thursday when he told other inmates he planned to kill himself, Davis said.

“He got up from the table, walks up the steps and basically just jumps over the guard rail,” he said.

The stairs led from the dining area to a second floor of cells. Davis said the fall was about 8-10 feet.

Mayberry’s injuries were not life-threatening, and he had movement in all his extremities, Davis said. He was transported to UAB Hospital.
