Two in a row: Isabella’s junior varsity volleyball team defeated Maplesville and Thorsby on its way to winning the county tournament on Thursday. It was the first time a Mustangs team had won back-to-back county titles.

Isabella won the Chilton County Junior Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Thursday—becoming the first Mustangs team, including the varsity, to win back-to-back county titles.

IHS defeated Thorsby in the championship game, 2-0 (25-17, 25-11).

“They trust what we’re trying to do,” Isabella coach Glen Graham said about the team. “They come in, work hard and listen to us.”

Graham said the group’s attitude is crucial to its success because there isn’t much experience to go around. The Mustangs include three players who had never played before this season and one player whose last court time came two years ago.

They were led Thursday by tournament Most Valuable Player Sydney Foster.

“I thought she played her position very solid all night,” Graham said. “She served well and was in control of the court.”

Also making the All-Tournament Team from Isabella were Amber Harrison, Yesenia Lopez and Emily Montes.

Thorsby was represented by Katelyn Beam (10 digs and five aces in two matches), Madison McClain (six assists) and Katie Watley (13 aces and three digs).

The All-Tournament Team also included Jemison’s Ashley Dutton and Katelyn Rowland, and Maplesville’s Kendrauna Griffen.

Earlier in the tournament, Maplesville defeated Chilton County, 2-0 (25-21, 25-6); Thorsby defeated Jemison, 2-1 (25-19, 10-25, 15-7); and Isabella defeated Maplesville, 2-0 (25-9, 25-15).
