Red Devils run over Isabella

Looking for daylight: Verbena’s Duante Talley runs for yardage during Friday’s 25-13.

Neither Isabella nor injury could stifle a victory for the Verbena Red Devils at Isabella Friday night.

The Red Devils had only 14 players to work with and still managed to defeat the Mustangs 25-13.

Verbena Head Coach Mike Harris said his team has coped with a lot of injuries lately, one of which sidelined his starting fullback early in Friday’s game.

“I just can’t believe we came out and did what we did,” Harris said. “These kids stood up to the task (and) showed a lot of character. I’m real proud of them.”

Isabella put up a good fight, however. Mustangs junior Bobby Knox scored the first touchdown of the game.

Verbena senior Jeremy Creger answered with another touchdown, tying the score in the first two minutes. Creger had a total of eight tackles and four assists.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, and Isabella was leading by one at halftime.

Verbena senior Bay Lucas scored a touchdown with six minutes left in the third, putting the Red Devils ahead 18-13.

The Red Devils closed it out with a touchdown by Verbena freshman Duante Talley with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Talley had seven tackles and three assists.

Verbena sophomore Jared Mims had seven tackles and two assists.

Harris said he hopes more of his players are healthy enough to play in next week’s game.

“Unbelievable,” Harris said about his team’s perseverance. “I’m very pleased. Just got to get some people healthy.”
