United Way drive to kickoff August 30

The Chilton County United Way has scheduled its kickoff event for Aug. 30 at 12 p.m.

Campaign chairman Bobby Martin said the kickoff would take place at the Alabama Power Company Conference Center and would be a similar format to years past.

“It’ll be just like a luncheon,” he said. “[United Way] agents will be there, and some of our bigger [donors] will be there. It’s a fun time.”

Martin said he hoped for a good turnout and an even better drive. $194,000 was raised last year, which was $6,000 short of the goal.

“It’s the first time we didn’t meet goal,” he said. “The economy was the problem. People were afraid to part with their money.”

Martin said he felt if people knew what an impact the funds made, they would be more likely to donate.

“We have [several] agencies we help fund,” he said. “It’s very vital to our community because a lot of the agencies are geared toward kids.”

Among the agencies supported are the Chilton County Y.M.C.A., Boy and Girl Scouts of South Central Alabama, and Toys for Tots.

Martin said the goal for this year was $200,000, and that things would start with a motorcycle ride sponsored by Walmart and Williams-Transco July 30, and the official drive would begin with the kickoff Aug. 30.
