M&M Farms win 4th straight auction

M&M Farms peaches won first place and were bought by Peoples Southern Bank at the Peach Auction.

Peaches from Mark Knight’s M&M Farms won first place in the Peach Festival Auction for the fourth consecutive year.

Knight’s peaches were bought by Peoples Southern Bank on Saturday at Jack Hayes Field for $1,900.

For the past three years, Knight has won with the PF13 variety, which this year came off about 10 days too early to be entered for the auction.

So, Knight turned to the Bounty variety.

“Before I got here, I thought I had a good chance to win,” Knight said. “But then I saw the other entries, and I thought I just had a good chance to place. I didn’t know I’d win.”

A total of $13,900 was raised in this year’s Peach Auction, which supports the Clanton Lions Club and its charitable work in the community.

Following is a list of the top five baskets, along with growers and winning bidders:

First place: Basket No. 27, Bounty variety grown by M&M Farms, sold to Peoples Southern Bank for $1,900.

Second place: Basket No. 31, Bounty variety grown by Jerry Harrison, sold to the Chilton County Farmers Federation for $1,600.

Third Place: Basket No. 7, Bounty variety grown by Henry and Suzanne Williams, sold to Clanton Tractor for $800.

Fourth Place: Basket No. 28, PF-12 variety grown by Green Farms, sold to Congressman Spencer Bachus for $1,000.

Fifth Place: Basket No. 23, Harvester variety grown by Todd’s Produce, sold to The Clanton Advertiser for $900.

After the top five, the baskets are listed in order of bidding:
