Humane Society Thrift Store closing

Chilton County Humane Society’s thrift store, Second Chances, is having a going out of business sale Saturday, June 18.

The store, which has been in operation for more than a year, was started to help raise money for the local humane society chapter.

Tom Cuthbert, the society’s vice-president, said he felt the tough economic climate along with plenty of competition led to the decision to close the store.

“With the economy like it is, the store never took off,” he said. “There seems like there’s a thrift store popping up on every corner.”

The store, located next to Smokey T’s barbecue in Clanton, started out in another rent-free location, but the landlord of that building found a tenant, causing the store to move to its current location in August.

Cuthbert said that while the store didn’t make a lot of money, it didn’t hurt the humane society any either. He did say, however, the recent lack of donations to the society put them in a bind.

“I guess because of the tornadoes donations are way down,” he said. “We’re really under funded.”

Cuthbert also said that those who come to the sale will find a little of everything.

“We’ve got books, shoes, jewelry, and some odds and ends,” he said.

The sale will take place Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on the sale or the Humane Society call Cuthbert at 646-4205.
