2011 was a historic season in local baseball, with all six Chilton County teams earning a berth in the state playoffs, and Billingsley coming oh-so-close, being edged out by Isabella.

The talent on The Clanton Advertiser’s All-Area team reflects this success.

All nine position players named to the first team finished the season with a batting average close to or in excess of .400. Tops on the list is Thorsby junior Jason Price, who batted .577 for a Rebels team that made the school’s first ever appearance in the semifinal round of the state playoffs.

Maplesville senior Bobby Smith led the area in home runs, with eight.

Chilton County sophomore outfielder Cameron Cummings and Thorsby freshman Matt Morgan bring youth, speed and versatility to the first team.

Both Cummings and Morgan also pitched for their teams.

Cummings, Morgan and Chilton County’s Craig Headley were the only players named to the first that weren’t juniors or seniors.

Headley teamed with senior teammate Adam Minor to form the middle of the batting order for a Tigers squad that exceeded expectations and made the third round of the playoffs.

Senior Scott Clements and junior Cruz Martinez helped lead Jemison to its first playoff appearance since 2006.

And there are three seniors on the first that were their teams’ primary pitchers: CCHS’s Chance Calloway, Maplesville’s Tyler Crumpton and Thorsby’s Cody Carroll.

Crumpton also batted .416, and made the list as an outfielder.
