The Clanton City Council voted during Monday night’s council meeting to upgrade the city police department’s radio system.

The upgrades, which will cost $34,000 plus about $8,200 for installation, will replace all the department car and handheld radios. The system will be with SouthernLINC Wireless.

In other business the council tabled approving a permit for this year’s Peach Parade until questions were cleared up concerning its route. The route proposed on the permit will keep the parade off U.S. 31.

“If we approve a parade route, it needs to be used by everyone,” said Mayor Billy Joe Driver, referring to the Peach Parade and Christmas Parade.

Police Chief Brian Stilwell said he had planned to discuss the route later this week with organizers.

Stilwell, Driver and the council discussed several variations to the route that would not completely block someone’s ability to drive north and south through the city during the parade for too long, which some drivers have complained about in recent years.

The matter is expected to be brought up again at a future council meeting. The parade is the morning of Saturday, June 25.

The council also approved an off-premise retail beer and wine license for Dollar General’s 7th Street South and Clanton Marketplace stores. They also approved a retail lounge liquor license for Kokomo’s at Day’s Inn.
