Local preacher gets down and dirty for Relay For Life

When it comes to fundraising for charity, most stick to the basics — bake sales, car washes and walks or runs.

Jim Shannon, pastor of Lime Springs United Methodist Church, is trying out a new idea … dumpster diving.

Shannon, famous for his stunts to earn money for Relay For Life, has agreed to spend one hour in a garbage dumpster for every $100 raised by his church.

“Every year I try to do something,” said Shannon. “This year, I’m going to play ‘Oscar the Grouch.’ ”

If it seems crazy, don’t be alarmed. Shannon’s no stranger to crazy promotions, especially when it comes to fundraising for Relay For Life.

“I’ve done days in a makeshift jail out in front of the church, spent days on a high lift, stayed days in a bathtub or on a toilet in front of the church. I’ve walked 25 miles nonstop before,” he said.

Shannon indicated that staying in a dumpster wasn’t his first choice, but there wasn’t much else to choose from.

“I ran out of ideas,” he said.

Shannon is hoping he can stay in the garbage awhile, once he does get in.

“I’d like to stay as long as possible,” he said. “This year’s been slow because of the economy, but I’m hoping for 24 hours.”

Shannon will begin his tenure in the dumpster Wednesday night. For more information, call 205-217-5183.
