Devils earn win in Game of the Week

The Central Alabama Red Devils continued an impressive start to their first season with a 25-14 win over the Alabama Avengers on March 12 in a game the National Developmental Football League declared the Game of the Week.

The two teams combined for only two first downs in the first quarter, but the Avengers struck first, intercepting a pass and returning it 47 yards for a touchdown.

Christian Briscoe passed to Jamar Hopson for 36 yards to set up a one-yard run by Briscoe with 4:12 remaining in the first half to tie the game.

The game was nodded at 6 at halftime, but the Red Devils began the second half with a 64-yard touchdown drive concluded by a 10-yard pass from Briscoe to Hopson with 9:28 remaining in the third quarter.

Allen Edwards added the extra point to give host Central Alabama a 13-6 lead.

But the Avengers took the lead with 6:28 on the clock on a touchdown pass and then a run for a 2-point conversion.

Briscoe connected with Hopson again with less than one second left on the clock in the third quarter. The 10-yard TD pass and a failed extra point made it 19-14 going into the final period.

With 13:10 remaining, Brian Frith recovered a fumbled Avengers snap in the end zone for the game’s final points.

Briscoe completed eight of 13 passes for 126 yards, and Hopson caught six passes for 113 yards.

Briscoe also led the Devils in rushing, with 77 yards on 19 carries. Jeremy Anderson added 20 yards on eight carries.

The Devils (2-0) will host another game Saturday, when the Georgia Eagles visit George Walker Jr. Stadium at 6 p.m.
