Poplar Springs Baptist to hold women’s defense class

Poplar Springs Baptist Church will host a women’s self-defense class Saturday, Feb. 26 from 2-4 p.m.

The class, held at Chilton County Taekwondo on U.S. 31, is one the church felt led to put on.

“As strange as it may sound,” said event coordinator Alisha Ledford, “this was something we felt the Lord laid on our hearts to do.”

Ledford said part of the reasoning behind the event was how much domestic violence has hit home with members of the church.

“We have some members who volunteer at the Sunshine Center, and some who have been through [domestic abuse], so it is close to our church,” she said.

Through the class, the church hopes that those who attend will be able to learn some self defense tactics in a non-threatening environment.

“[The class] will give them an opportunity to be in the [abusive] situation, but controlled. They can see how they’d respond in those situations,” said Ledford.

Above all, Ledford stressed that no matter what age, there will be a good time to be had for all who attend.

“It’s free, it will be fun, and there will be something for all ages. We have plenty of space, so feel free to invite as many as you want,” she said.
