County sees large growth in Hispanic population

Chilton County saw a large increase in its Hispanic population from 2000 to 2010, according to census numbers released Friday.

In fact, Chilton County was among the fastest growing counties in Alabama for Hispanic or Latino growth— increasing from 2,268 in 2000 to 3,420 in 2010, or 197 percent.

Concerning race, the census showed Chilton County to be 84.1 white, 9.7 percent black and .3 percent Asian.

Overall, Chilton County’s population grow 10.2 percent this past decade. With 43,643 residents, Chilton County ranks 30th out of 67 counties in terms of total population.

Census numbers for individual cities and towns in Chilton County still weren’t available Friday but should be released soon.
