The town of Maplesville will hold its second annual Heritage Day on Saturday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Heritage Day is a street festival celebration of the town’s 190 years plus of history. Several historic homes will be open for tours, as well as the Maplesville Methodist Church.

“We have a lot of things we want do,” said Maplesville Historical Society Vice-President Clem Clapp.

Along with the tours, the town’s Southern Depot Museum will have a continuous showing of an hour-long DVD on the history of the town, as well as a display containing over 120 pictures and documents from years gone by. There will also be a discussion of union General James Wilson’s Raid during the Civil War, and its impact on the town.

“The event started out as part of Small Town Alabama day [last year],” said event planner and town clerk Shelia Haigler. “The turnout was so great, we wanted to continue it.”

The town itself was founded in 1818, and encompasses areas that are now considered their own communities. Historical Society President Joel Atchison hopes that those communities will come celebrate their heritage too.

“It’s a homecoming, basically,” said Atchison. “Not just for Maplesville, but also the communities around it. Lawley, Randolph, Stanton and others.”
