Verbena, Maplesville boys lose in basketball playoffs

Both of the local basketball teams that played in area tournaments Tuesday lost, bringing their season to an end.
Loachapoka’s boys team defeated Verbena, 78-33, in the Class 1A, Area 6 tournament at St. Jude High School in Montgomery.
Akron’s boys team topped Maplesville, 50-42, at the Class 1A, Area 5 tournament at Keith High School.
The Red Devils trailed by six points, 10-4, after one period of play and by 12 points, 23-11, at halftime.
But MHS outscored Akron in the second half, 31-27.
Anthony Johnson scored more than any other Devil, with 19 points. Teammate Matt Hamner added 13 points.
No local teams will play Wednesday, but playoff action will resume Thursday.
Thorsby’s girls will play host Francis Marion in the Class 2A, Area 7 tournament, at 6 p.m.; Thorsby’s boys will play R.C. Hatch at 8 p.m. in their tournament, which is also at Francis Marion High; and Jemison’s girls will play Dallas County at 4 p.m. at the Class 4A, Area 6 tournament at Southside-Selma High School.
