The new circulation desk at the Chilton-Clanton Public Library was installed Jan. 8.

The Chilton-Clanton Public Library recently replaced its old circulation desk with a new one thanks to a memorial donation given by library board member Jean Thompson Miller.

Miller passed away summer 2009, and left the library with numerous items including books and photos.

Miller served on the library board for more than 16 years.

“She gave all of her books that the sons didn’t want,” said Mary Jo Abernathy, library director. “It was a really nice surprise what she did, and we are very thankful. Books get torn up and what we have done with her money will be here.”

One of Miller’s sons contacted Abernathy and presented the library with the donation. The desk was installed Jan. 8, and a plaque will be placed commemorating Miller.

“The new desk gives us a huge work area so we can work at the front counter and serve the patrons,” said Glenda Greg, librarian. “It is very nice and provides us with plenty of space.”

In addition to serving on the library board, Miller was also a retired teacher.

“The money was given strictly to the library, and we will be sending her children pictures of our new circulation desk,” said Darlene Brock, library bookkeeper. “She was an avid reader and loved the library.”

This donation was the most significant amount the library has ever received, Abernathy said.
