The 22nd annual Chilton County Area Honors Band concert will be held at the Clanton campus of Jefferson State Community College on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.

Auditions to obtain a chair in the performance were held in December and 64 students were chosen to represent eight local schools. The schools that will be represented in the concert include: Calera, Chilton County, Isabella, Jemison, Maplesville, Marbury, Thorsby and Verbena high schools.

“If you haven’t been to one of the Honors Band’s concerts you’re really missing a treat because we have some very talented musicians in our county and the area,” said Stephen Pounders, Thorsby High School’s band director.

To obtain a chair, auditions consisted of the students preparing three chromatically adjacent scales, a prepared piece set by the Alabama Bandmasters Association and a sight-reading of something they have never seen before.

The conductor of the concert will be Ronnie Mallory, former Clanton band director. It will be directed by Sandy Stevens, CMP, event coordinator at Jeff State Community College.

The performance will be located in Jeff State’s Economic Development Center Auditorium (EDC).
“This will be Jeff State’s first concert in their new auditorium,” said Pounders. “More than 150 people attended the concert last year and we are hoping to have an even better turnout this year.”

Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for students and children. The proceeds will benefit the Chilton County Area Band Directors Association.

“Set your DVR for the football game Saturday and come hear an outstanding concert from our students of the Chilton County area,” said Pounders. “The students will receive a medal for their participation and for their accomplishment, the first chair players will receive an additional medal.”
