The Clanton City Council voted Tuesday to grant alcohol licenses to current businesses under new ownership.

New licenses were granted to Pop a Top at 1505 Seventh St. N and QuickStop, formerly Shine’s, at 3514 Seventh St. N. Both businesses currently have licenses, but state law requires new licenses when there is a change of ownership.

In other business, the council took the following actions:

•Approved sending the mayor or city council members interested to the National League of Cities conference in Washington, D.C. from March 12-16.

•Approved sending Clanton animal control officer Chris Whittle to the police academy next year. After the academy, Whittle would be able to make arrests — he currently must have another officer present to make arrests.

Tuesday’s meeting was moved from its regularly scheduled fourth Monday due to the Christmas holidays. The council’s next meeting will be Monday, Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. at Clanton City Hall.
