The Maplesville Town Council voted on who will fill their vacant District 3 council seat at Tuesday’s meeting.
After going into executive session to discuss the candidates, Fire Chief Michael Abbott won 3 to 2 and was named District 3 Councilman until the next election in 2012.
The seat became available after former councilman Aubrey Latham stepped up to fill Kurt Wallace’s positions as mayor.
“It’s something that I’ve thought about doing for a long time,” said Abbott.
After the voting, Abbott took his oath of office and took his seat on the board as a Maplesville councilman immediately.
In other business, the council voted to increase the current $25 fee to use the town depot. Beginning Jan. 1, the price to use the depot will be $50 for the first four hours and $10 thereafter. The increase was made to help cover the electrical expenses every time the venue is used.
The council also voted to keep three wrecker services Henry, TNT and Auto Collision in rotation as wrecker choices for the town.
This decision was made just in case one service cannot make it to a location quickly or at all, then they will have another service close by to call.
Additionally, toys have been purchased for 140 kids for Maplesville’s annual Toys for Kids drive this Christmas. There are 26 more children to purchase toys for and more people have donated to the drive, said town clerk Sheila Haigler.
