Hensley scores game winning points for VHS

Philip Hensley’s two points in Verbena’s boys game at Billingsley on Saturday were big ones.

Hensley scored the game winning layup with 11 seconds remaining in the contest, and then the Red Devils (2-6, 0-1) withstood several shot attempts by the Bears and held on for the 57-56 win.

VHS led 34-26 at halftime, but the hosts held a 47-41 advantage going into the fourth period.

T.J. Ray, Marquez Deramus and Fred Wright each scored 14 points for Verbena.

The total was a career high for Wright, who hit three 3-pointers and also recorded 15 rebounds.

Billingsley was led by A.J. Tyus and his 21 points. Carlos Caver scored 15 points.
Verbena’s girls had an easier time in their 62-34 win.

Marqueska Deramus posted game-highs with 28 points and 24 rebounds, and both Lacey Short and Hope Driver had 10 points.
