Maplesville Councilman Aubrey Latham was chosen to be the town’s next mayor Thursday.

The town council appointed Latham mayor to fill the vacancy left by Kurt Wallace, who was elected Tuesday to represent Chilton County in the Alabama House of Representatives.

Latham, who has served on the council since 1996, said he hopes to continue to work of Wallace and the council.

“I’m going to try to keep doing what we’ve been doing,” he said.

Latham will be formerly sworn in at the beginning of the council next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

The new mayor said leading the town will take continued teamwork by the council and other leaders.

“No one person will be able to run this town; it’s going to take a team,” Latham said.

Latham will finish the rest of Wallace’s term, which runs through the election of November 2012.

In his resignation, Wallace said it was a honor and a priviledge to serve the town as mayor.

Latham’s appointment means his District 3 council seat is now vacant. Anyone interested in serving on the council in District 3 should contact Maplesville Town Hall at (334) 366-4211.
