An 18-year-old Union Springs teen was killed and her passenger seriously injured following a wreck Sunday morning on U.S. 82.

Ashley Lynne Martin died after the 2010 Toyota Corolla she was driving in left the road and struck a tree about 5 miles east of Maplesville, according to State Troopers.

The wreck, which only involved one vehicle, happened at approximately 8:15 a.m., troopers said.

The sole passenger, identified as 19-year-old Shundrea Smith, also of Union Springs, was seriously injured and taken to UAB Hospital.

Troopers continue to investigate the accident.
