Local volunteers and children from surrounding schools went out and made the 14th Lake Mitchell fall cleanup a success.

Volunteers with or without boats met at Higgins Ferry Park on Saturday, Oct. 23 for 4 hours, picking up trash in support of the Renew Our Rivers campaign.

“We had 20 students from the Thompson High School Key Club to show up, three from Coosa County and we had a couple from UAB,” said Lee Bendall, a member of the Lake Mitchell Homeowners and Boat Owners Association (HOBO). “Plus local people on the lake and the Alabama Power Company sent two boats and captains to help pick up trash.”

Approximately, 50 to 60 people attended the event and several boats were used.

“The cleanup went great, we had a great big dump truck full of trash that we collected,” said Bendall. “ We had a lot of fun and cleaned up a lot of trash.”

Cleanups are held each year from February through October on the Cahaba, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Black Warrior, Mobile and Alabama rivers.
