MAPLESVILLE – Now 9-0, the Maplesville Red Devils defended their home turf and their undefeated record Friday night with a 47-0 win over the Sunshine Tigers.
Dustin Stephens put the Red Devils on the scoreboard in the first quarter.
With 6:27 on the clock, Anthony Johnson intercepted the ball from the Tigers, and shortly after Red Devil Quarterback Matt Hamner ran for the touchdown, making the score 13-0.
After another touchdown by Stephens and an incomplete pass by Sunshine, Maplesville picked up about 4 yards getting the 3rd down ending the first quarter 27-0.
Two minutes and 13 seconds into the second half, Hamner threw a touchdown to Cody Howell, making the score 33-0.
The score was 34-0 Red Devils going into halftime.
Leading rusher of the night, Hunter McCay, had four carries with 82 yards and scored one touchdown, while Hamner completed 6 out of 10 for 85 yards passing.
Coming back and ready to finish the game, Edwin Pettiway, intercepted the ball and sprinted down the field scoring making the score 40-0.
Stephens made another interception, and Brintain Hill picked up 22 yards.
Leading receiver of the night, Dustin Stephens, had two catches, 30 yards and one punt return for 55 yards.
The Sunshine Tigers recovered the ball after the Red Devils made a fumble on a play during the third quarter.
“Definitely, we need to catch the ball; we didn’t do a good job at catching the ball and we messed up on some blocking assignments,” said head coach Brent Hubbert. “We have to correct those things before the playoffs get started.”
The Red Devils went on to score another touchdown, ending the game 47-0 with 87 yards passing and 190 rushing yards.
“Two emotional games back to back, I think our intensity was not where it should be, but you know, we did what we had to do to get a win and get to 9-0,” said Hubbert.
Next week, the Red Devils will be playing away at Sipsey Valley.
