Local Republican candidates took the opportunity Monday to align themselves with the man they believe will be Alabama’s next governor.

Six people running for office spoke at a rally at Clanton’s Corner Park.

Maplesville Mayor Kurt Wallace gave an introduction and then handed the microphone to Robert Bentley, who will face Democrat and current Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Ron Sparks in November’s General Election.

Bentley told the 40 or so in attendance that creating jobs is the No. 1 issue facing the state and stressed the differences between he and Sparks—but was sure to give a plug to the other political hopefuls on stage with him.

“I want you to vote for me, but I want you to vote for the people standing behind me, also,” Bentley said.

Others that spoke echoed the theme.

Cam Ward—running unopposed for Alabama Senate District 14, which includes Chilton County—followed Bentley and State Auditor Sam Shaw.

“Don’t vote for them just because they’re a Republican…vote for them because of their stance on issues,” Ward said.

Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis was next to speak, about a concern that has arisen while he has been campaigning door-to-door.

“What I’m hearing now, people are so sick of the Democrat Party…they think it’s a sure thing Republicans are going to win,” Davis said. “That scares me to hear that.”

Superintendent of Education candidate Dave Hayden mentioned the county Board of Education passing last week a $73 million budget for the fiscal year that begins Friday.

“I say we have a responsibility to spend that money wisely…see that it makes it down to the kids.”

Wallace concluded the rally by repeating its principle message.

“You need to keep your votes in the same party,” Wallace said. “If you like what Dr. Bentley said—if you don’t elect the right people under him, you’re wasting your vote.”
