Clanton Police arrested two Montgomery men Thursday for theft of property totaling more than $1,200.

Jerome Henderson, 32, and Lance McCullough, 19, allegedly entered the Clanton Walmart Supercenter and took a large amount of Similac baby formula, two 50-pound bags of dog food and smaller items. Both subjects are charged with theft of property second degree, a Class C felony.

“We are seeing a drastic rise in the felony cases we are working with the suspects being from either Montgomery or Birmingham,” Clanton Police Chief Brian Stilwell said. “They come to smaller counties thinking they can get away with it. I think all of us, Jemison PD, the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office and Clanton Police Department, are doing a pretty good job of catching them and putting them in jail. Maybe the word will get around and they will stay in their home cities.”

Walmart in-house loss prevention observed and followed the subjects, alerting police. Deputy Sheriff Eric Price observed the vehicle, a 1991 Honda Accord, and made a traffic stop near I-65 Exit 205 on Highway 31 about 4 p.m. Clanton police officers and detectives responded to the traffic stop and recovered the property.

Detective Freddie Mayfield, the arresting officer, thanked all those who assisted in the case.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for all the guys out on patrol. They just make my job as an investigator a lot easier,” he said.

A bond had not been set for either suspect as of Friday.
