Worthwhile cause needs help

About 80 people are on a waiting list for meals provided by the Meals on Wheels program.

The important service is provided by the Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging, with help from volunteers, both donors and drivers.

The M4A is provided so much money by the Alabama Department of Senior Services, but it’s not enough to provide hot meals once a day to the 400 seniors (79 of which live in our county) who are on the waiting list for Chilton, Shelby, Blount, Walker and St. Clair counties.

That’s how we all can help out. The organization has a program called Hearts for the Hungry, where people can sponsor a senior for $82.10 a month. That’s just $2.74 a day.

M4A also needs volunteer drivers and other assistance. For more information, call (866) 570-2998 or 755-3248.

I hope all of you have a great Fourth of July. The Fourth is one of my favorite holidays, and I look forward to spending some time with my family and get some work done around the house.

Take some time this weekend to remember why we celebrate this holiday – it marks the founding of the greatest country in the world.

Happy Fourth!
