As if the annual Chilton County Peach Festival didn’t bring enough people to town, Clanton will be the site of three youth league baseball tournaments this weekend.
City Park will host the Dixie Youth Baseball District 4 tournaments for the AA and O-Zone divisions and the North sub-district tournament for the AAA division.
“We’ve been a little busy,” said George Ramsey, president of Clanton Dixie Youth. “Certainly, parents are the main ones that look forward to the games being here, not having to travel. The kids sometimes don’t grasp it; they’re just out there playing ball.”
Games in each age group will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. A second will follow on Friday and Saturday, and on Tuesday if necessary.
In the AA (7- and 8-year-olds) division, the first game will be between Valley Grande and Monroe County, followed by Clanton and Sweet Water. In the AAA (9- and 10-year-olds) tournament, the first game will be Chiltauga against Marbury, followed by Clanton and Valley Grande. Clanton and Marbury will play first in the O-Zone (11- and 12-year-olds) tournament, followed by Selma and Chiltauga.
All three tournaments will use double elimination format.
The winners of each district tournament will advance to the state tournament. The top two teams in the AAA sub-district tournament will advance to the district tournament, which will be played at a site yet to be determined.
