Candidates running for Chilton County Board of Education superintendent will participate in a debate tonight at 5 p.m. at the Chilton County High School auditorium.

Hosted by the Chilton County Education Association and Education Support Professionals, the informational meeting will allow candidates Tommy Glasscock, Jason Griffin, Dave Hayden and Larry Raines to address pertinent county issues leading up to the election.

“All four gentlemen are respected members of their communities and their schools,” Jacqueline Sullivan, a Maplesville High School reading and language arts teacher, said. “The question is which one would be the most beneficial for the Chilton County School System.”

The candidates will be asked questions by a moderator with no questions allowed from the floor.

Sullivan said the candidates do not know the specific questions that will be asked, but they have a general idea of the topics to be covered.

Topics will include plans for the school system, ideas to increase student achievement, employee morale and goals for improving graduation rate.

Each candidate will have two minutes to respond to questions.

During the last 10 minutes of the debate, each candidate will have an opportunity to summarize their plans for the county school system, according to Sullivan.

“Because of the number of candidates and the hour time limit, this meeting will not be a typical debate with opportunities for rebuttal,” she said.
