23 local athletes headed to BSC

Three more local athletes last week qualified for their respective state track and field meets, bringing the total of local athletes set to compete at the highest level to 23.

Isabella’s Austin Haigler and Blake Lawley, who qualified in the shot put on Friday, both qualified in discus on Saturday at the Class 2A, Section 1 meet at Smiths Station High School.

Lawley was third in the section in the event with a throw of 111’11”. Haigler was sixth at 103’4”.

Also on Saturday for Isabella, Sarah Graham qualified in the 800-meter run with a sectional-best time of 2:45.

Graham qualified on Friday in the 1,600 meters.

Davis Ratliff also qualified for state with a time of 12:22 in the 1,600-meter run that was fifth best in the section.

Billingsley’s Octavis Harris posted the best distances in both the discus and the shot put events at the Class 1A, Section 1 meet last week at Montgomery Academy and qualified for state in both events.

Lori Davis qualified in three events: the 100-meter hurdles, javelin and shot put. Davis was second in the section in the shot.

All local athletes will compete in their respective state meets at the same location, Birmingham-Southern College, on Friday and Saturday.

Isabella will send a total of four athletes, Maplesville will send three, and Thorsby 15.

Chilton County did not have an athlete advance out of the Class 5A, Section 2 meet at Beauregard.
