Isabella senior QB to play at Huntingdon

Isabella High School senior Allen Edwards will play football at Huntingdon College in Montgomery starting next fall.

Edwards, a quarterback at IHS, will attempt to switch positions and take on wide receiver. Edwards said he might lack the proper amount of height to play quarterback at the next level, so he has no problem playing whatever position that affords him the chance to play college ball.

“It feels really good just to know that I get to play for four more years,” Edwards said. “It’s just not over when I thought it was over. I just want to go to a position where I’ll get on the field and not sit on the sideline.”

Edwards is especially pleased he’ll join IHS teammates Hunter Mims, a fellow senior, and recent graduate and cousin Del Green, who is enrolled at Huntingdon.

“I just know it’s going to be fun and a good learning experience,” Edwards said.

Edwards said he will pursue a major in business management and also consider secondary education with the idea to teach history and coach high school football.

He said his father, Ralph, taught him everything he knows about football and learning from him has encouraged him to teach others.

“I’ve been playing football since I was 5-years-old, and I’ve loved every minute of it,” he said. “I wouldn’t know anything about football if it wasn’t for my dad.”

Ralph Edwards also played high school football for IHS. The opportunity resonates with Edwards especially because of the encouragement his family has shown him throughout his years at school.

“My mom and dad really supported me 100 percent,” he said. “Signing with Huntingdon meant a lot to me. My parents wanted to see me go to college and do something with my life. Getting an education is going to help me out a lot beyond football.”

Edwards said Green suggested he schedule an appointment to tour Huntingdon and meet the football coaches, which prompted him to seek out opportunities to play there.

“I just knew that’s where I wanted to go,” he said.

Edwards will participate in team workouts this summer. He will commute to school from Isabella starting this fall. Ralph, who coached Allen up through his early playing years into high school, said he can’t wait to go watch the Huntingdon home games to see his son’s dream realized on the field.

“We were proud of him for being able to go academically as well as playing sports,” Ralph Edwards said. “We’re just proud of him for the things he’s achieved on and off the field. He’s hit the weights hard. He’s been slightly undersized, so he’s had to work a little harder to achieve his goals. He just loves it. He’s beside himself about this opportunity.”
