Chilton County High School on Thursday won the first official Chilton County Golf Tournament, with its four best golfers combining for a 296 over 18 holes at Montevallo Golf Course.

CCHS golfers Forrest Knight and Ivan Truss tied for the best round with a par 71, but Truss was awarded a plaque after the contest by virtue of a tiebreaker.

The team champion and runner-up were also awarded plaques, giving this year’s tournament a more advanced feel.

Last year, the tournament wasn’t called as much beforehand, and three teams competed: CCHS, Isabella and Jemison.

Thorsby competed in Thursday’s event.

“We’re really hoping that people take an interest in golf and we can keep it rolling,” Jemison coach Kelly Smitherman said.

Jemison was second with a 375, and Garin Hayes recorded its best round, an 88.

Thorsby scored a 423 as a team, and Andrew Farris shot an 87.

Blake Jenkins had a 73 for CCHS, and teammate Travis Helms shot a 77.

Tigers coach Brian Carter said he thinks his team is playing well at the right time of the year.

“I’m hoping we’re peaking at the right time because we’ve got sectionals on Tuesday,” Carter said.
