Daniels dazzles Devils

Dallas County High School pitcher Cassie Daniels struck out 16 Maplesville High School batters Wednesday afternoon in a 5-0 win for the Hornets.
Daniels and MHS pitcher Courtney Killingsworth each pitched four hitless and scoreless innings before the Hornets unleashed the bats.
Outfielder Rodnesha Vinson drove in pinch runner Briana Atkinson midway through the game to put the first runs on the board. Whitney Denson then smoked an RBI-double, bringing Vinson across home plate to put the Hornets up 2-0.
The Lady Red Devils (7-5) finally put a runner on base in the fifth inning on a Courtney Killingsworth base hit, but they failed to drive in any runs.
Down two runs, MHS began to wear down as the spring heat baked every last player, coach and onlooker at the field.
DCHS’s pitcher inflicted pain from the batter’s box, too, accounting for a pair of hits during the second half of the game.
DCHS catcher Kendall Veach drove a run in with a double, increasing her team’s lead to 3-0.
Perhaps finishing off the Lady Devils for good was Jessica Spears ripping a Killingsworth pitch into left field for a two-RBI triple.
Still throwing high-velocity pitches in the final inning, Daniels struck two batters out and grounded out the last batter to give the Hornets their seventh win of the season.
