Hazel Juanita “Memaw” Glasscock Johnson Stephens was born on Nov. 12,1916 at Lock 12, Lay Dam in Chilton County.
She was born to Maudie Wilson Sims from Talladega (deceased 1918), and Arthur Vaughn Glasscock from Jemison (deceased 1969).
Our dear precious mother and Memaw of Clanton touched many lives over the course of 93 years on this earth. The hard and sad times she lived through in her earlier years only served to make her strong and drew her closer to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
She was a member of the West End Baptist Church in Clanton, where her delight was to teach Bible studies and Sunday School.
Our mother had great faith and trust in the Lord and spent hours every day praying for her family and their friends. Countless lives have been touched and changed for the better because of her consistent and persistent prayers.
One of her greatest achievements was returning to school at the age of 55 years to become a nurse. She loved baking the best fruitcakes ever made and giving them away at Christmas time.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles H. Stephens.
She is survived by two sons: F.C. “Buddy” (Othella) Johnson Jr. and Jack W. (Diane) Johnson; one daughter: Juanita Johnson (Mrs. Ross Delano) Dorroh; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and two special nieces: Fay Bombino and Marian Powell.
Our kind thanks and great appreciation go to her primary physician, Dr. Hirenkumar Jani, and to the many kind and caring doctors and nurses at Shelby Baptist Medical Center, South Tower who worked so hard to make mother’s last days as comfortable as possible.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. from the West End Baptist Church in Clanton with the Rev. Tony Smitherman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Saturday. Interment will follow in the Martin Memorial Cemetery in Clanton.
The family suggests memorials in her memory be made to the West End Baptist Church Annie Armstrong Easter Offering Fund at 2005 2nd Ave. Clanton, AL 35045 or to Gideons International – Chilton County Camp at P.O. Box 1744 Clanton, AL 35046.
