SELMA — Southside High School’s baseball home opener didn’t go as the Panthers had hoped.

Blake Crumpton went 2-for-3 and scored three runs to help lead Maplesville High School to an 8-6 win Friday at Bloch Park.

“It’s our second game of the season, and we’re still trying to find our eye for the ball,” Southside coach LaMorris Jones said. “We’re just trying to produce runs somehow.”

Maplesville got off to a hot start with a four-run second inning, and added three more in the fourth before the Panthers started a rally.

In the fourth inning, back-to-back singles by Wibert McConico and Michael Perryman set the table for a two-run inning.

McConico stole home for the first run, and Labarrin Eaton got an RBI single later in the inning.

The Panthers (0-2) got singles from Mario Olver, Jermal Dudley and Ragaderius Thigpen in the seventh inning and scored three runs to cut into the lead, but it wasn’t enough.

“We have four new players who haven’t played high school,” Jones said. “Our record doesn’t indicate how good of a team we are.”
