Several new names were dropped the night of Feb. 9 as both the Chilton County Democratic Club and the Chilton County Republican Party met.
Among them was Kurt Wallace, currently the mayor of Maplesville, for a seat in the Alabama House of Representatives. Wallace plans to run as a Republican against Democratic Incumbent Rep. Jimmy Martin, who announced his re-election bid late last year.
Because Wallace attended a Maplesville Town Council meeting, he had Carol Harrison make the announcement for him.
“I am throwing his hat into the ring,” Harrison said.
Also, Verbena High School Principal Larry Raines announced he is running for superintendent of education. Both he and LeCroy Career/Tech Center Director Tommy Glasscock plan to run on the Republican ticket.
Republican Circuit Judge Sibley Reynolds announced his bid for re-election to Seat 3 of the 19th Judicial Circuit, for another six-year term.
Several candidates for sheriff spoke briefly at both meetings. Terry Wilson is running on the Democratic ticket, against the following Republicans: Incumbent Kevin Davis, former sheriff Billy Wayne Fulmer, Ronnie Gilbert and John Shearon.
Both Gilbert and Davis have switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.
More announcements will likely be made in the near future. Democratic Club chairman Bobby Martin said a possible candidate for superintendent of education and another for coroner were ready to announce within a matter of days.
On a related note, local attorney Chris Speaks said he is considering running for District Judge in 2016 on the GOP ticket. Currently, District Judge Rhonda Hardesty is seeking re-election in 2010.
State candidates who spoke Tuesday night include Democrat Mac Parsons and Republican James Houts, both seeking Place 3 on the Alabama Supreme Court, and Republican Chris “Chip” Beeker, a candidate for Public Service Commission Place 1.
Next month, gubernatorial candidate Artur Davis will speak for the Chilton County Democratic Club.
