Chilton County is under a winter storm warning Friday, with the National Weather Service calling for heavy snow from midnight to 6 p.m.

Chilton County Schools made the decision to close Friday, and will reopen Tuesday after President’s Day on Monday.

Forecasts predict snow will begin falling after midnight across western parts of the state, near Eutaw and Greensboro. The snow will quickly spread east, moving into central Alabama in the early morning hours.

The snow will begin to taper off around lunchtime into Friday evening.

How much snow will stick on the ground isn’t clear, but forecasts call for anywhere from two to four inches in Chilton County. South Alabama could receive up to 5 inches of snow, maybe more.

The weather services says areas west of Interstate 65 will receive their heaviest snow between 7-11 a.m., while areas east will get the heaviest snow later between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A winter storm warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.

Whatever snow does fall, if any, will unlikely tie Clanton’s February record for snowfall in a single calendar day. That record was set on Feb. 13, 1899, with 10 inches of accumulation.
