Chilton County public schools will make up the school day missed Friday on the first Friday in April.
Friday, April 2 is the next listed weather day on the official school calendar. School will also resume Monday, Jan. 11, Superintendent Keith Moore confirmed.
Moore said the primary reason schools were closed this Friday was the possibility of ice on roadways. He said he rode more than 100 miles of Chilton County roads prior to making the decision Thursday night.
“That’s why we put weather days in our calendar, so we don’t have to put our kids in a dangerous situation,” he said.
School buses have to travel on many secondary roads in the county, which are not as heavily traveled as major highways and may be more prone to ice, Moore said. He also reported seeing a few slick spots on County Road 97 in the Verbena area.
“That’s what concerns me are the roads that are least traveled on,” he said.
Schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 18 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For the complete school calendar, visit http://chilton.k12.al.us and click on the calendar link.
